China - Hotan (Hetian)

19 images »

Hotan (Hetian or Khotan) - Hotan lies in the Tarim Basin on the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, just north of the Kunlun Mountains. It was a key location on the ancient Silk Route and still has a strong tradition in silk weaving.

On the way to Kashgar from Hotan we stopped off in Yengisar, famous for its beautifully crafted knives - a tradition dating back at least 400 years.

Japan - is a wonderfully diverse country to visit... with its mix of the ancient and the ultra-modern. This album is just a taste of some of my photographs from Japan.

Taklamakan Desert - The Taklamakan Desert is in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and is huge. It is bounded by the Kunlun Mountains to the south, and Pamir Mountains and Tian Shan to the west and north. The name probably means 'abandoned place', but it is popularly believed to mean "go in and you'll never come out".

These pictures were taken as we drove across the desert from Luntai to Hotan, camping along the way.

The Turpan Despression - Turpan (Turfan) is located in the Turpan Depression in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is inhospitable, yet inspiring and beautiful. The city once served as a trade center on the Silk Road. The Jiaohe Ruins, Gaochang Ruins, Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, Su Gong Ta (Emin Minaret), and the ancient 'Karez' well systems are some of its attractions.

Turpan can get very hot (up to 48 degrees). The area has the second lowest point on Earth at 155m below sea level.

China -Karakul Lake - On a road trip along the Karakoram Highway to Taxkorgan (Tajik Autonomous County, Western China), I was lucky enough to make time for two visits to a small Kyrgyz community living by Karakul Lake.

The lake is stunning... what a wonderful place to live, with the Mustaga Ata (part of the Kunlun range) as a backdrop.

China - When I decided to go to China, a few people questioned my ethics, but I judge a country by it's people, not it's government. Though I simpathise with the people of Tibet and Xinjiang.

The only way to understand a country and it's people is of course to go there!

In the end I spent 2 amazing months in China, and as with most other places I've been, the people were friendly and welcoming...
